At Cross Cultures, we believe in the transformative power of football to inspire and change lives. Through the Open Fun Football Schools (OFFS) project, supported by the Moldova Football Federation (FMF), we work to promote peace, inclusion, and gender equality. The inspiring journey of Nicoleta and Georgeta Betco, two sisters from the village of Delacău, Anenii Noi, beautifully embodies how football can help young girls discover their potential and chase their dreams.
The Journey of Nicoleta and Georgeta Betco
In 2022, Nicoleta and Georgeta first stepped onto the football field at the Școala Sportivă in Anenii Noi, where they were introduced to football under the guidance of coach Larisa Lazari. Their first experience with football came through the OFFS project, which sparked a passion in the sisters and encouraged them to dream big. The project provided them with essential skills on the pitch and empowered them with the confidence to believe in themselves and their abilities.
For Nicoleta and Georgeta, football is about much more than victories on the field; it represents the pursuit of a shared dream. Their deep bond and belief in each other have been key to overcoming the challenges they’ve faced.
Today, Nicoleta and Georgeta are sisters and teammates, supporting and motivating each other through every challenge. As they continue developing their skills and growing as players, they know this is just the beginning.
Svetlana Patraș on Nicoleta and Georgeta's Journey
Svetlana Patraș, coordinator of the CCPA/OFFS project, shared her thoughts on Nicoleta and Georgeta’s growth:
“I am so happy to see Nicoleta and Georgeta back on the field, enjoying football and sharing a passion for the sport, just like my sister, Natalia, and I did. It’s wonderful! Nicoleta and Georgeta are always smiling and bring such positive energy. I wish them to continue finding joy in what they do and to always support each other, both on and off the field!”
The Impact of Cross Cultures and the OFFS Project
Since its launch in 2006, the OFFS project has impacted over 100,000 children, 2,700 coaches, and 2,500 young volunteers across Moldova. By promoting values such as peace, social inclusion, and gender equality, OFFS has created equal opportunities for both boys and girls, ensuring that young girls like Nicoleta and Georgeta Betco have access to the tools they need to succeed. The project is breaking down barriers and giving girls the opportunity to learn new skills, build self-confidence, and dream big.
Cross Cultures has also had a lasting impact on girls’ football outside Moldova, particularly in countries like Bosnia. Our Breaking Barriers initiative has worked to empower girls like Tamara Benković, who faced many obstacles in a society where football for girls is still uncommon. Her story is a testament to the fact that with the right support, girls can rise above adversity and make their mark in football.
The Future of Women’s Football in Moldova and Beyond
The story of Nicoleta and Georgeta Betco is just one of many examples of how the OFFS project is empowering girls across Moldova. By providing equal opportunities for girls to play football, we are helping to shape a brighter future for women’s football in the country. As the sisters continue their journey, they are a reminder that with passion, dedication, and belief in oneself, anything is possible.
